WHY TV?

According to Nielsen, the well-respected audience measurement company, Americans continue to watch video on the "best screen available," and traditional TV remains the screen of choice.

In 2012, Nielsen reported that U.S. TV households numbered 114.2 million. About 98% of U.S. homes had at least one television, and many had more than one.

The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau reported in 2012 that Cable TV Saturation stayed at an all-time high, reaching over 90% of U.S. households. TV gained popularity among younger viewers: 72% of teens and 70% of adults ages 18-24 watched at least as much television as they did in the year before. All age demographics reported they believed TV was the best device for watching video.

Rumors have been circulating that declare TV is dead and smartphones are the preferred medium for video consumption. Not true. Despite the explosion of smartphones and tablets, time spent with TV continues to dominate viewing and grows year-over-year.

The 2012 TVB Media Comparisons Study indicated that on a daily basis, TV reached over 89% of media consumers ages 18 and up, significantly more people than any other medium. Nielsen reported in 2011 that, on average, viewers spent over 32 hours (1,920 minutes) per week watching TV, versus only 27 minutes per week watching internet video and a measly 7 minutes per week watching mobile video. The same report indicated that 62% of U.S. adults had watched TV and used the internet at the same time, and 38% of smartphone owners looked up product information while watching TV on their devices. In 2012, the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau found that use of the modern mobile devices had fed, not killed, TV viewing.
